Our Trustees Expand Colin Flenley I retired from General Practice in 2019 after 40 years working for the NHS. I’m still actively involved in teaching both undergraduate medical students and qualified doctors. In particular I have a passion for teaching on subjects dealing with ‘Compassion without burnout’, ‘Resilience’, and ‘Communication skills’. I’m a tutor for an international medical education charity. Aside from work, I play the saxophone, and enjoy cycling, badminton, and high altitude mountaineering. In volunteering as a trustee for Heartcare Healthy Living, I believe I can utilize some of my skills, I can provide a link between the charity and Primary Care, and as a recently retired clinician I hope I can engage with the staff on current clinical issues. Harry Madhar I have worked in the NHS for the last 36 years! Having trained at Walsall in the Sister Dora College of Nursing, I continue to work at Walsall Hospital. I have worked in cardiology for the last 29 years. During which time I have been privileged and involved to see a dramatic change in the NHS from door to needle time for thrombolysis, to being involved in the pathway for a 24/7 Primary PCI Pathway at our local tertiary center. Having worked in coronary care as a charge nurse, my career turned to Cardiac Rehabilitation and Acute Coronary Syndrome Nurse Specialist for the last 20 years. I have been a finalist for the Nursing Time and HSJ Awards for innovative practice and patient care. I have also been recognised by the Department of Health for best practice in addressing health inequalities within Walsall. Been involved and presented on a national video campaign to address smoking in ethnic groups. Helped to set up and establish the first pathway in the UK identifying and treating our cardiology patients for high cholesterol using an innovative monoclonal antibody. I am passionate about teaching and in 2019 joined Walsall’s Undergraduate Medical Team as an Academy Tutor for University of Birmingham medical students. My background in cardiology has developed close links with Heartcare over the years. I am privileged and honored to be offered the role of a Trustee and will endeavor to support the excellent work provided by Heartcare. Paul Burns "Hello, I’m Paul and I am very proud to be a new trustee at Walsall Heartcare Healthy Living. I started my career in Accountancy after leaving University in 1992. I qualified in 1998 and remained in practice before moving into industry in 2006. I have held several positions in various sectors before settling in my current role as Group Financial Director for a medium sized stock holding company in 2013" "I am also a trustee of a bowls club in Erdington. I am an active member of a kick boxing club and enjoy dog walks and family time. I hope to use my experience and skills to support this vital charity" Mark Walsh "I trained as a State Registered Nurse in the early 1980s and I worked for the NHS for 37 years most of this was spent in cardiac nursing. The latter half of my career encompassed a number of managerial and commissioning roles before retiring in 2016". "I have a keen interest in cardiac rehabilitation and during my career had close links with a number of cardiac rehabilitation services across the Birmingham and the Black Country". "I worked for Walsall Manor Hospital for a number of years and referred many patients to Heart Care so appreciated the positive benefits of the rehabilitation service". "This made it an easy decision, to serve as a Trustee and didn't hesitate to take on this role". "I remain committed to helping Heart Care deliver help and support to local patients and hope we can continue, in alliance with the NHS and community to deliver this service for many years to come". Phil Griffin I am a recently retired NHS senior manager with considerable commissioning, project management and contracting experience . I have always wanted to use this experience to the benefit of the voluntary sector so I was delighted I was able to join the Heart Care Trustees about 18 months ago. I have particular expertise in working with NHS clinicians including consultants, GPs, specialist heart nurses, cardiac technicians and patients. My work involved improving the coronary care pathway in Walsall including rehabilitation services using nationally developed cardiac standards. I am also able to support contract review processes with our local commissioner and undertake a range of Governance oversight responsibilities expected of a Trustee including financial review and risk management . I truly believe that cardiac rehabilitation is a very important part of the heart pathway and as a Trustee I will work to ensure that the services we have developed as a Charity over many years continue to be available to people that need them now and in the future.
